Museveni Accuses Opposition of Electoral Threats Affecting Vote Count

President Yoweri Museveni has claimed that 10 million NRM supporters never voted in the just concluded general elections.

Museveni who has been newly elected for the 7th term as the president of Uganda says the NRM party register gave them 21 million supporters by the end of 2024, however on scrutiny in May 2025 only 18 were eligible to vote. On reconciling with the National Register of the Electoral Commission at least 8 million NRM Voters had been fully registered after the verification exercise of the Electoral Commission.

This meant that had all the NRM supporters voted the opposition would not have had chance to claim for any votes in the just concluded elections because even the 10 million voters who never turned up were NRM supporters.

This was during his address at the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the NRM/A liberation day today at Kololo Ceremonial grounds, the day when the NRM/A fighters captured Kampala ending the Five-year liberation struggle and the military rule of UNLA led by late Gen Tito Okello Lutwa.

The celebrations were held under the theme: tribute to the Patriots who ushered in a fundamental change.

Museveni blamed low voter turnout to three points that is; the opposition that use terrorism approach in the political arena which threatened a number of Ugandans from voting, indifference of the police  force to prevail over such threats to Ugandans and misbehavior of some NRM leaders due to selfishness and indiscipline turned away many from voting.

On 17th January at Lubowa Electoral Commission’s Headquarters President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner of the 15th January 2026 general elections with more than 7.9 million votes (71.6%) beating his main challenger Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of the opposition National Unity Platform who polled over 2.7 million votes (24.4%) and 6 others.

According to the Electoral Commission a total of 11.33 million votes were cast on the 15th January 2026 out of 21.64 million voters registered by the electoral body.
