Kabale Court Bailiff Tragedy

Kabale court bailiff tragedy as the Kigezi region police are currently probing the circumstances surrounding the sudden demise of a court bailiff on Monday in Nyakambu-Kekubo Kabale Town. The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Gideon Akankwasa, a resident of Kanoni Village in Maziba sub-county, Kabale district, who had been serving as a court bailiff in the Rukungiri district magisterial area.

Elly Maate, the spokesperson for the Kigezi region police, stated that the incident unfolded on January 15 at approximately 5 am when Hategeka Saverino, the wife of businessman Mwunva Mbonigaba, discovered Akankwasa’s lifeless body near the garage of their residence. Promptly, she contacted her husband, who works at Kabale Central Market, and together they reported the case of sudden death/murder at Kabale Central police station.

Cleofas Byamugisha, brother of the deceased, disclosed that Akankwasa had been grappling with mental, liver, and brucellosis zoonosis diseases leading up to his demise. Byamugisha shared that the last communication he had with his brother was a few days before Christmas, during which Akankwasa mentioned his intention to collect allowances from Rukungiri Magistrate Court.

On the day before his passing, Akankwasa visited family in Rwakaraba Trading Center in Kabale before heading to Kabale Town, where he was later found dead. While acknowledging suspicions that his death might be linked to his prior health challenges, Byamugisha urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the true cause of death.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police’s homicide unit, led by D/SP Hakim Mukama, reported that the victim had been seen on Sunday evening lying at the top of a cliff near Mwunva Mbonigaba’s residence. Allegedly, he slid from the cliff and fell, succumbing to his injuries instantly.

By Monday evening, a postmortem had been conducted, and the body was released to the family for a dignified burial. The Kabale police station registered the case as a sudden death. Akankwasa is survived by his wife and two children, and his funeral is scheduled for Wednesday in Kanoni Village, Maziba Sub County, Kabale District, as announced by the relatives.
